Annual or monthly billing: what the discount actually buys

Paying yearly usually saves around a sixth. Here is how to check what that is worth to you, and what you give up to get it.

Nearly every software company offers two prices: one if you pay monthly, a lower one if you pay for a year up front. The lower number is always the one on the big button. It is worth knowing what you are actually trading.

What the discount is typically worth

Checked on 24 September 2026, Slack lists its Pro plan at $8.75 per user per month billed monthly and $7.25 billed annually. Business+ is $18 and $15.

Work those out and the annual price is about 17% below the monthly one on Pro, and about 17% on Business+. Roughly a sixth off is a normal size for this discount across the industry, though it varies and you should check the specific product rather than assume.

For a ten-person team on Slack Pro that is $870 a year instead of $1,050 — a difference of $180. Across a stack of six or seven tools, the same arithmetic repeats each time, which is where it starts to matter.

What you give up

The ability to stop. A monthly plan can be cancelled next month. An annual commitment usually cannot, and the discount is the price the vendor pays you for that certainty. If you are still deciding whether a tool is right, the monthly price is buying you an option, not wasting your money.

The ability to shrink. Annual per-seat contracts are commonly sold at a fixed seat count for the year. Adding seats mid-term is easy; removing them often is not. If your headcount might fall, or you hired seasonally, annual can cost more than monthly in practice even at a lower sticker price.

Your cash, now. Paying twelve months up front is twelve months of cash out of the business today. For a company watching its bank balance, that can matter more than 17%.

A reasonable rule

Pay monthly while you are still deciding. Switch to annual once a tool has proved itself and you are confident about headcount. The discount will still be there; vendors do not withdraw it.

And before you commit for a year, read what happens at the end of it — see our page on auto-renewal, because an annual plan that renews itself silently is a very different commitment from one that asks.
